Follow Your Gut

When fighting an autoimmune related disorder, the feeling of hopelessness almost certainly overwhelms you at some point. Finding the AIP diet has restored my faith in our ability to one day overcome these chronic health issues. If I hadn’t ‘followed my gut’ then I would never have found this wonderful and supportive community. The Paleo community has given me so much that I wanted to give back in a meaningful way. In 2018, I decided to start the Follow Your Gut fundraiser.

What does the t-shirt say?

The shirt always says ‘Follow Your Gut’ but there is a unique design every year.  To see the designs from over the years click on the years below.

The autoimmune community gets to vote on the design they’d like to wear. If you’d like to vote for next year’s design, please sign up for my email list.

Why ‘Follow Your Gut?’

The term ‘follow your gut’ was chosen for three reasons.

  1. It was the most popular choice by you the autoimmune community in early 2018. There was a social media poll and ‘follow your gut’ won in a landslide.
  2. It can take years to be diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. Therefore it’s always important to follow your gut and continue seeking help when you know something is wrong.
  3. Those that take a functional or integrative approach to health believe the key to good your wellbeing begins in your gut. ‘Follow your gut’ has a real significance when it comes to not only gut health but also your overall health.

Who are we going to help?

While the Follow Your Gut fundraiser is an independent project, we’ve teamed up with Dr. Terry Wahls and decided to donate the proceeds to the Terry Wahls MD Research Fund.

Proceeds will be used to grow the diet and lifestyle research of the Wahls Protocol. Private support has allowed Dr. Wahls and her research team to grow her clinical research and apply for larger national grants, like the MS Society grant to research the Wahls Elimination diet vs Swank Diet and its effects on MS fatigue. In addition to the clinical research in MS, Dr. Wahls and her research team are looking to study the Wahls Elimination diet in the setting of ALS, and other chronic diseases. Through her research and developing the Wahls Protocol, she has helped thousands of individuals around the world reverse or stop the progression of their diseases.

Who is Terry Wahls? What is the Wahls Protocol?

Dr. Terry Wahls is not only the creator of the Wahls protocol but also one of the most inspiring success stories. For more on her story, check out this Ted talk via her website. The Wahl’s protocol is considered a Paleo diet and is very similar to the Autoimmune Protocol as it is also used to treat autoimmune conditions.

When is the fundraiser?

The fundraiser lasts for two months over the summer and corresponds with the Wahls Seminar Iowa.

If you’d like to know when the seminar launches, please sign up for my email newsletter.

I’m not a fan of super sweet salad dressings but I like this Pumpkin Maple Vinaigrette. The maple syrup adds just a little bit of sweetness. Not sugary sweet just natural pumpkin sweet. It’s a great balance between sweet and savory.
